The Slabsides, Waterfall, & Peninsula Trail loop offers a diverse and engaging jog through the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary. You'll navigate through dense hemlock woods, past dramatic rock outcroppings, and along serene ponds, including the scenic Peninsula Trail with its expansive water views. The route also features a 70-foot boardwalk over a swamp and several waterfalls, making for a constantly changing landscape over its 3.9 miles (6.2 km).
This moderate 45-minute jog, with 242 feet (74 metres) of elevation gain, starts at the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary in West Park, NY, where parking is available. Be aware that while much of the trail is easy, some sections are rugged with stone staircases and narrow rock ledges, requiring careful footing. The visibility and flow of the waterfalls are best after recent rainfall, so plan your visit accordingly.
What truly sets this trail apart is its connection to naturalist John Burroughs; the loop winds around "Slabsides," his rustic cabin and a National Historic Landmark. This 200-acre sanctuary is a haven for wildlife and forms part of the broader Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail system. It's a unique opportunity to combine a refreshing jog with a step back into the history of American conservation.
