Snow pits were used to store snow in winter, which was then sold in summer to the nearest towns.
Snow was used to preserve food, soft drinks, and for medicinal purposes. The snow pits reached their maximum expansion during the 16th to 19th centuries, coinciding with a particularly cold period.
Snow pits were abandoned in the late 19th century with industrial ice manufacturing. This well preserves part of the masonry cover that rests on 1.5 m walls. thick.
