Best Road Cycling Rides to Illuminated Tunnels on the Via Verde de la Val de Zafán

Tips

  • On this section of the Via Verde you drive through many tunnels (as the path runs on the former railway line). Many of the longer tunnels are illuminated, the light is switched on via motion sensors. Well done! But some tunnels are also unlit (perhaps lights are still being installed?). So think about a lighting system if you want to cycle the route!

  • The Via Verda runs over the former railway line of the Zafán valley, which connected Aragón with the Mediterranean Sea and was in use for more than 30 years. The connection was closed in 1973, but the route has since been restored into a bicycle and walking path. The Terra Alta route runs through impressive nature reserves and mountain landscapes and famous places such as Horta de Sant Joan, where the painter Picasso stayed for several years.Along the route you will pass old train stations that have now been converted into restaurants or guesthouses to spend the night. Arriving in Tortosa you can view the monumental heritage of this historic city. Finally, you cycle through the Delta de l'Ebre natural park and the Ebro estuary. Large ponds, swamps and dry land alternate. In bird huts you can observe various waterfowl and with a bit of luck you will see a flamingo population. We were at camping la G The Via Verda runs over the former railway line of the Zafán valley, which connected Aragón with the Mediterranean Sea and which has been in use for more than 30 years. We stayed at campsites la Fresneda in the same village of La Fresneda. Tour of 40 km through 40 tunnels, most of them descending, so easy to ride, leaving from Cretas at the local bicycle rental (we had our own bicycles) and we will pick you up at the end of the route, this can be arranged via the campsite.
