🛂 Border line on Matajur
The summit lies exactly on the state border – the chapel stands on the Italian side, a few meters further on Slovenia begins. The border runs along the ridge to the east and is marked by numbered border stones. It dates from the Paris Peace Treaty of 1947: until then, Kobarid (Caporetto) also belonged to Italy, after which the Soča valley went to Yugoslavia. Since 2007, the border has been open through Schengen. In October 1917, the young lieutenant Erwin Rommel captured the summit here – part of the Karfreit breakthrough.
