The Sabinal Lighthouse began operating in 1863, but in 1915, another temporary lighthouse was put into operation while the original was moved stone by stone 400 meters further inland. This new lighthouse opened in 1926, but was hit by an earthquake in 1956, causing significant damage to the tower's structure.
