Hiking
The Lillo redoubt dates from 1596 and was located on the Mangelbeek. It served to protect the population against traveling army gangs that made the countryside unsafe. The fortress was an earthen wall with a moat around it. Nowadays this is used as grassland and the fortress is only recognizable by an elevation in the landscape.

In the sixteenth century, there were four redoubts in Houthalen: on the Brelaar, in Laak, on the Standaard and in Lillo. The redoubt of Lillo was completely hidden on the edge of a marshy area. It was located on the border of Lillo and Helchteren and consisted of a raised middle section of approximately 80m long and 40m wide.
