On the night of August 13, 1933, in the hunting grounds of Commercial Councilor Eugen Abresch, in what is now the Neustadt district of Speyerdorf, two men were killed in a shootout between two poachers and four law enforcement officers: one of the poachers and a police officer. A year later, on September 1, 1934, an inscribed memorial stone was erected at the site of the incident for the slain police officer, Arthur Löffler (1898–1933), which is colloquially known as the Poacher's Stone or Löffler Memorial. Two information panels were later added.
