The foundation of this Renaissance building in the first half of the 16th century is due to the carver of the Order of Calatrava Frey Fernando Fernández de Córdova y Mendoza, who is revealed to us as one of the great patrons of this era.
This is reflected not only in the pious spirit of their foundations, but also in that common ideal among Renaissance men of achieving fame after death, through the work of art.
Frey Fernando decided to found, with his considerable assets, a convent in Almagro that belonged to the Order of Preachers of Santo Domingo under the dedication of Our Lady of the Rosary and a university to enlighten the people of this land.
