As the only French settlement in New Zealand and one of the first European settlements in the country, Akaroa enchants with its beautiful harbor, the Akaroa Harbor, and its colonial architecture. In 1838, French whaling ship captain Jean François L'Anglois decided that Akaroa was the ideal location for a town to serve as a base camp for the whaling ships.
