    Story

The mountain church of St. Margarethen was first mentioned in 1447 in the Salbuch of St. Margareth as part of a purchase transaction. A certain Georg Sabelkiel from Flintsbach sold his property to the Church of St. Margarethen for 46 pounds pfennigs. However, due to its age, the building must have existed as a chapel before. It is located on a hill in the district of the same name in the municipality of Brannenburg, surrounded by old farmsteads that were probably built between 1000 and 1100. Major renovation work was carried out in 1654; in 1732 the late Gothic winged altar was replaced and added in 1755. The cemetery houses the graves and memorial plaques of well-known personalities. The branch church of St. Margarethen belongs to the Flintsbach church district.

St. Margarethen was the capital of the municipality founded in 1818 by the Bavarian edict
Rural community of Großbrannenberg, which became part of the community of Brannenburg on January 1, 1978 as part of the municipal reform.

The church, the cemetery, the cemetery wall with the two gates and the ossuary are under monument protection and are entered in the Bavarian list of monuments under file number D-1-87-120-50.
