The history of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Ambro begins around the year 1000 with the apparition of the Virgin to Santina, a mute shepherdess, who received the gift of speech in exchange for her prayers. The sanctuary, which takes its name from the nearby stream, saw the construction of an initial chapel and subsequent expansions and renovations, until it became an important center of Marian devotion, known as the "little Lourdes of the Sibillini."
