The Serra d’Irta has an interesting historical heritage. Particularly noteworthy are the Arab buildings, such as the castle of Xivert and Polpis and the watchtowers of Badum and Ebrí. They bear witness to human settlement for many centuries and the military importance of the region. Built around the 10th and 11th centuries, the castles were restored several times by the Almoravids, but also by Christian orders such as the Knights Templar and the Order of Montesa.
