The Serra d’Irta has an interesting historical heritage. Particularly noteworthy are the Arab buildings, such as the castle of Xivert and Polpis and the watchtowers of Badum and Ebrí. They bear witness to human settlement for many centuries and the military importance of the region. Built around the 10th and 11th centuries, the castles were restored several times by the Almoravids, but also by Christian orders such as the Knights Templar and the Order of Montesa.

The Serra d'Irta Natural Park together with the d'Irta Marine Protected Area is a nature reserve covering 12,000 hectares, located in the northern part of Alcossebre.

The typical plants of the semi-arid areas with a Mediterranean climate grow here. The pine forests live in harmony with dwarf palms, rosemary and fennel. On the coast with cliffs and coves, spectacular white lines can be observed, created by the limestone in the ground.

The natural park is located in the north of the Valencia region, between the towns of Peñíscola, Santa Magdalena de Pulpis, Alcalà de Xivert and Alcossebre.
