    Running

The beginning and end section of this segment of the Appalachian Trail between Gathland Picnic Shelter and White Rocks gains a fair bit of elevation at the start and end, but the middle is fairly flat.

It's a lovely, challenging run for those familiar with trail running. The ground can become rocky underfoot and tends to collect ice in the winter, so best completed in the warmer months.

The Appalachian Trail to White Rocks Overlook offers a classic Mid-Atlantic trail running experience, winding through serene pine forests and over distinctive rugged quartzite rock outcrops. You'll navigate challenging, rocky terrain that demands careful foot placement, especially on the ascent, before reaching the expansive View of White Rocks. From this panoramic vantage point, you can take in sweeping views of the valley, including Middletown, and the distant Catoctin Mountain Range.

This moderate 7.0-mile (11.2 km) route involves 787 feet (240 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 1 hour and 27 minutes to jog. It's best suited for experienced trail runners or hikers comfortable with technical, uneven surfaces. Parking is usually available at trailheads along the Appalachian Trail, and visiting during spring or fall offers the most pleasant conditions and best visibility.

This trail is notable for its connection to the iconic Appalachian National Scenic Trail, allowing you to experience a piece of this legendary long-distance footpath. The White Rocks themselves are often geologically significant, featuring ancient rock formations. If you're seeking a serious challenge on the trails, the View of White Rocks – Ed Garvey Shelter loop from Keedysville is a difficult 41.7-mile (67.1 km) jogging route that will test your endurance. With a substantial 3420 feet (1042 metres) of elevation gain, plan for approximately 7 hours and 48 minutes to complete this journey. You'll traverse varied terrain, from rocky sections to more runnable ridge lines, and be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views from Weverton Cliffs over the Potomac River.

This extensive loop largely follows sections of the Appalachian Trail, so be prepared for the trail conditions typical of the AT in Maryland, including steep climbs and rocky segments. While the Ed Garvey Memorial Shelter has a spring, remember it requires a significant downhill detour to access, so carry plenty of water. Parking for the Ed Garvey Shelter loop trail from Keedysville should be researched in advance, as specific details are not provided.

Beyond the physical challenge, this route offers a blend of natural beauty and history. You'll pass through Gathland State Park, a Civil War historical site, and encounter the unique Ed Garvey Memorial Shelter, often called the "Hilton of AT shelters." This trail is an excellent option for experienced trail runners looking for a long, demanding day out in the Washington County area.
