The archaeological site of Kato Samiko extends to the north of Lake Kaiafa and may be identified with an ancient city that has successively called Makistos, Arini and finally Samia or Samakion or Samos. It is strategically positioned as it dominates the fertile plain of Samika and dominates the road that united Pisatida with Triphylia and western Messinia in antiquity. It includes a prehistoric citadel that occupies the rocky hill, as well as a classical acropolis that extends to the east.
