The Pawnee Buttes tower over the grasslands like ancient islands. With an elevation of about 300 feet, the two buttes withstood their ground when the surrounding was slowly washed away by erosion. They consist of layers of soft sedimentary rock at the base with harder sandstone and conglomerate sediments on top.
