In order to make the market square a tourist attraction, the city of Aurich commissioned the artist Albert Sous, who comes from Würselen near Aachen, to design a sculpture. The art object, a 25 meter high tower made of steel pipe covered with Plexiglas, was erected in 1990. The building materials were essentially waste from the Jülich Research Center. The building was and is not without controversy. There is a sign on the tower itself that addresses the disputes over the Sous Tower.
