Although it is a Buddhist temple, it is dedicated to “Devol,” a local deity who protects the fishermen and their boats. The Devala site consists of two parts. On the mainland and on a small island about 200 meters away in the sea, accessible by boat. Believers who make offerings to the “Devol God” on the island do so with the approach of receiving justice. They grind chilies, talk about the injustice done to them and ask for a curse on their enemies.
In addition to the main shrine room for Devol, there are smaller shrine rooms for other popular deities, Katharagama, Vishnu, Natha and Pattini. On the mainland there is also the shrine, a Buddha image house and a Bodhi tree. The area must not be entered with shoes.
