Masarolis is a small hamlet in the municipality of Torreano, where most of the inhabitants speak the local Slovenian dialect. The first documented traces of Masarolis date back to around the year 1000, with ancient documents in Slovenian testifying to the construction of a villa.

In the center of the hamlet there is a fountain that offers drinking water, and on the top stands the statue of an imprisoned lion. Legend has it that the local community asked the mayor for permission to build the fountain and the aqueduct to avoid the effort of drawing water from springs far from the town centre. Not only was the request rejected, it was also thwarted. However, the determination of the population led to the complete construction of the fountain in September 1895, with the imprisoned lion symbolizing the defeated authority.
