The Hazeltop via Appalachian Trail offers a delightful, short journey through Shenandoah National Park's varied forestland, including areas where old apple orchards once stood. To start your adventure, drive to Milam Gap on the western side of Skyline Drive, where you'll find convenient parking. Keep an eye out for an unmarked spur trail at roughly 1.9 miles, which branches off to the primary viewpoint at the summit; it's easy to overlook if you're not paying attention. This trail is generally well-maintained, though spring can sometimes bring blowdowns, so be prepared for minor obstacles.
Beyond the scenic views, the Hazeltop trail is a haven for wildlife, with frequent sightings of various bird species, deer, and even turkeys.
