This route takes you to the Paradana Ice Cave in the Paradana Nature Reserve in the Ternovana Forest in the Goriška region of Slovenia, where ice is present all year round.
The ice cave is accessible via a mouth at around 1100 m above sea level, which can be reached from the road via a 10-minute walk. The cave is around 850 m deep; its length is given as 7311 m.
Ice was extracted from the cave for the city of Trieste. The ice was mined and transported to Trieste at night in blocks weighing 10 to 40 kg, where it was used to cool fish catches on fishing ships. It is also said to have been exported to Egypt in the 19th century.
