Hell's Hole Trail travels up this glacial basin to a small alpine pool. The views of the cirque's walls from the upper meadows are amazing, and this trail is usually less crowded than other trails about the same distance from Denver.

Challenge yourself on the Hells Hole Trail, a difficult jogging route spanning 8.1 miles (13.1 km) with a significant 1866 feet (569 metres) of elevation gain. This demanding journey, typically completed in about 1 hour and 53 minutes, guides you through a varied landscape. You will jog alongside West Chicago Creek, winding through beautiful aspen groves before the terrain becomes rockier and transitions into a dense pine forest. The trail eventually leads you above the tree line to the glacial cirque known as Hell's Hole, an open meadow often featuring a small pond at the base of Gray Wolf Mountain.

Before you head out, remember that this trail is located within the Mount Evans Wilderness. You will need to pick up a free self-issuing permit directly at the trailhead before starting your run. While the initial sections might be suitable for a steady jog, be prepared for the significant elevation and rocky ground, which can make sustained running quite challenging, especially as you climb higher. Plan your visit considering the difficult nature of the route.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the rugged beauty of the Mount Evans Wilderness. The journey takes you through distinct ecological zones, from creek-side aspens to high-altitude alpine meadows. Reaching the tree line around 11,500 feet provides expansive views and a true sense of accomplishment. It is a rewarding route for those seeking a strenuous jogging adventure in a pristine natural setting.
