    Hiking

McAdams Peak is a great lookout point in Pere Marquette State Park. Though it only sits at 828 feet, 252 meters meters tall, hikers can overlook Lower Stump Lake and the Illinois River, and a section of the Missouri River called Swan Lake. Visitors can look further into the Mark Twain National Wildlife Refugee.

    100m

Embark on an easy hike along the Goat Cliff Trail, a 2.1-mile (3.3 km) route that takes you through varied terrain, including older forests and rocky outcroppings. You will gain 319 feet (97 metres) in elevation, and most hikers complete the journey in about 59 minutes. As you make your way, you will pass through a young forest featuring trees like Sugar Maple and Shagbark Hickory, leading to a scenic lookout near McAdams Peak where you can enjoy views of Stump Lake, the Illinois River, and Swan Lake.

When planning your visit, be aware that some sections of the trail may have erosion, so watch your footing. While the changing leaves of fall offer a beautiful backdrop, consider visiting in winter for a chance to spot bald eagles, or in spring to see wildflowers such as Bluebells. This trail is a popular choice for experiencing the natural beauty of Pere Marquette State Park.

The Goat Cliff Trail offers more than just a pleasant walk; it provides a glimpse into the region's geology. You can observe distinct rock formations from the Cap-au-Gres fault, which are often more visible during the colder months when foliage is sparse. This route is a great way to connect with the park's unique natural environment and its diverse ecosystems.
