In the 17th century, Obbicht was located much further west on the Maas, approximately at the place now called Negenoord on the Flemish bank of the Maas. On January 15, 1643, the village was swept away and carried away by an unprecedented tidal wave of the Maas. The dike that Obbicht was supposed to protect proved unable to withstand the worst flood ever experienced. When the water receded, nothing was left of the village and more than 500 people were killed. The bed of the Meuse was shifted to the East due to this event. The current Obbicht was built on the site of the former Overbroek.
