In their heyday, the monks of Obona applied innovative techniques in agriculture and livestock, and taught classes in Latin, philosophy and theology. During the War of Independence the monastery was an improvised hospital and years later the monks abandoned it when the confiscation of Mendizábal. The building functioned until 1970 as national schools.
