The statue of António Fernandes Aleixo (* 1899 in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, +1949 in Loulé) was one of the most famous Portuguese folk poets. Today, he is widely known and considered a cult figure. He is called the "hometown poet of the Algarve." The seated statue in Loulé commemorates the fact that Aleixo was a regular here, reciting his verses to passersby. The statue was created by the sculptor Lagoa Henriques.
