Black Eagle Memorial Island is more than just a city park; it's a piece of history. This site originally housed Great Falls' very first hydroelectric dam power plant when electricity was still a novelty.
Black Eagle Falls which can be seen from the island is the first in a series of five Missouri River waterfalls that inspired the city's name. The falls are formed by the river's path through layers of sandstone, revealing the hard bedrock beneath.

You can hike out along the tip of the island on a flat packed gravel path. From the end you appear to be in the very river itself, as the water swells around you past a wooden fence shaped like the prow of a ship.
