The first documented mention of Birkenmoor dates back to 1340.[2] The place name indicates a swampy area.[2] At the beginning of the 14th century, Birkenmoor was under the control of the Hennebergers. In 1353 the place with the Coburg land came to the Wettin family by inheritance and was therefore part of the Electorate of Saxony from 1485, from which the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg later emerged.
