August 1, 1327: Zweder II of Vianen donated a piece of land to a chapel located on the site where our ancestors had previously had one. The costs were likely borne by his son-in-law, Willem van Duvenvoorde, known as the richest man of his time. Willem was keeper of the seals for the Count of Holland. (He died without legitimate children and left his fortune to a nephew, a Van Polanen. Through that family, the fortune ended up with the Nassaus of Breda and ultimately with William of Orange.)
The chapel of Vianen fell under the church of Gasperden, present-day Hagestein. The chapel was converted into a pseudo-basilica church. In 1345, baptismal and burial rights were granted, but under the authority of the pastor of Gasperden.
In 1435, the last obligations to Hagestein were lifted, and the chapel became an independent parish church (Our Lady of the Assumption). The church was expanded from a pseudo-basilica to a hall church. The main choir and side choirs, albeit in a smaller form, date from that period.
In 1540, a major fire raged in Vianen. The church itself was largely destroyed by fire. The tower and part of the walls remained standing. Reconstruction began almost immediately under the direction of master architect Cornelis Frederiksz van der Gouwe. The choir was raised, and the transepts were built. The windows were significantly enlarged, but were partially reduced in size during or shortly after construction, a fact that is still clearly visible on the exterior.
After 1540, no further major renovations took place. On September 25, 1566, Hendrik van Brederode removed the statues from the church, and the building came into the hands of the followers of the Reformation.
