The folk tradition of Abruzzo is rich in legends, cults, beliefs and stories related to Christian holidays. In numerous villages over the centuries, the interaction between pagan rituals and Christianity has given rise to very interesting and peculiar local traditions. Every year on October 31 and November 1, the Pumpkin Festival (Sagra Della Zucca) takes place in Serramonacesca.

In Serramonacesca, children dress up as the dead, walking with pumpkins carved in the shape of heads ('Cocce de morte' - 'Heads of the dead') from house to house. When the host asks, "Who's there?", they respond in chorus with the name of this annual event, "L'aneme de le Morte."
They then receive candy, dried fruit or small money from household members. The souls of the dead are represented by pumpkins illuminated from within and glowing. During these days, according to Abruzzian beliefs, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead is blurred.

You should be aware that Halloween is only one version of this folk show. The idea itself did not originate in the USA. It exists in Europe and is still alive and practiced, at least since Celtic times. Abruzzo is a perfect example of this.
