Seggerde was originally a simple fortification that was built in the marshy area of the Aller. It later became a well-fortified knight's castle. What is interesting is that the moats were preserved during the subsequent construction of the three-wing castle. Therefore, together with the castle pond, they are probably the oldest protected bodies of water in this complex.

In the course of further renovations and new buildings, today's castle pond with an island and the horse trough as well as many bridges, walls and fortifications were created. In around 1896 the former estate mill was converted into a hydroelectric power plant.
