The Hellern ponds, or Heller for short, are small fish farming ponds that were created by the Reinfeld Cistercian monks between the 12th and 16th centuries. A "heller" or "holder" is used to store fish caught alive. In contrast to all other fish ponds in Reinfeld, these were not dammed but rather excavated, which is why they have a regular rectangular shape. They are traversed by the Piepenbek, which flows out of the house ditch and flows shortly afterwards into the Heilsau. Today there are still 4 of these ponds here. Originally there were 5 dug ponds and the "Small Pond", another dammed pond on the "Müllerwiese", where the large parking lot is today.
