Tamarama Beach is a small beach between two prominent headlands with a sand-filled valley to the rear, surrounded by beautiful parkland and picnic areas. Due to its deep water, small size and easterly exposure, Tamarama is dangerous for most swimmers even in moderate swell. According to the Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club, Tamarama is considered the most dangerous patrolled beach in New South Wales, with more rescues per thousand bathers than any other Sydney beach. A small swell can create currents of up to 2 metres per second. There are always one or two currents present, so the entire surf zone is virtually rippled. As the swell increases, an offshore rock outcrop forms a stunning 12 to 15 foot wave, attracting dedicated surfers, photographers and spectators who enjoy the magnificent spectacle from atop the cliffs.
