There are two viewing points at the open-cast mine. At the northern point, near the village of Welzow, there's not much to see anymore because the area has been largely leveled. At the southern point, you're closer to the machines. However, the machines are mobile, and visibility also depends on where work is being carried out. It's definitely worth it, though; soon this too will be industrial history—partly because the burning of coal is no longer justifiable for environmental reasons. The Jänschwalde power plant alone burns 14 million tons of coal annually, resulting in CO2 emissions of 15.2 million tons.
