Kaʻū Desert Trailhead is the beginning of a hike to see foot prints left in 1790 in ash by Navtive Hawaiʻians. These trails have been long-used for centuries. The Kaʻū Desert isn't technically a desert; it gets too many inches of rain per year. The area looks like a desert due to a few things: rain shadows from Mauna Loa, acid rain from Kīlauea Volcano eruptions, and the difficulty for plants to grow in lava rock.
