The history of the library dates back to 1832, when it was founded as the national library of Bessarabia. From 1876 to 1939 it was run as the Chisinau public library and since 1940 as the national library. It is the country's main library and UN depository library. There is a statue of the writer Vasile Alecsandri in front of the building.
