Location: Zarrentin am Schaalsee, Ludwigslust-Parchim, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1194 as “Zarnethin”. The name is derived from the Old Slavic word “črŭnŭ” and means something like “place of the black”. The core city lies on the southern bank of the highly structured Schaalsee, which is part of the biosphere reserve of the same name. The Schale, which flows through the urban area, forms the natural outflow of the lake.
