The historic Whitebridge, named after the colouring of its stonework, was constructed in 1732 under the overall supervision of General Wade as part of a military road linking Fort Augustus and Inverness.

The Whitebridge crossed the River Fechlin and was used by road traffic for 200 years until a new road bridge was added alongside the old bridge in the 1930s. The Whitebridge is a fine example of a single-arch ‘Wade’ bridge. The old bridge is markedly humped, probably to counter high water levels when the river was in flood.

The village name of ‘Whitebridge’ comes from the name of this old ‘Wade’ bridge.

It is delightful to walk over the renowned Whitebridge, to admire the longevity of its construction, and to imagine the scene nearly 300 years ago when the bridge opened.
