Bishop Gottschalk of Ratzeburg founded a Cistercian nunnery between 1229 and 1235 and endowed it with great power. During the Reformation the monastery was dissolved in 1558. In the great fire on August 9, 1835, the entire monastery complex, including the church, rectory and sexton's shop, was destroyed; only the curtain walls of the monastery church remained. The new church was built on these circular walls and consecrated on the 4th of Advent 1839.
