The Great Sphinx of Giza is a sculpture of a man with the body of a lion. The ancient Greeks called it the "Sphinx" because it resembled the winged monster from Greek mythology. To the Arabs, it was known as Abu Al-Hol, which translates to "Father of Terror."

The Sphinx was carved out of the bedrock along the causeway that connected the Pyramid of Khafre to its Valley Temple. Therefore, it is likely that it was carved during the reign of Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC). It is also believed that the face of the Sphinx was modeled on the facial features of the Pharaoh Khafre.

The Sphinx is oriented west to east and is 73 m long and 20 m high.
