The highway passes through the small town of Queets, at the northern edge of the Quinault Indian Reservation.

According to Quinault legends, the name 'Queets' is said to have its roots in the unique phrase 'out of the dirt of the skin.' This remarkable river originates at the base of the Humes Glacier, nestled in the southeast slopes of Mount Olympus in the Olympic Mountains.
