The Cavallosa Sanctuary is so named after the name of the estate where the sanctuary stands.

The original chapel, built between 1700 and 1701, corresponds approximately to the left nave of the current sanctuary.
Between the years 1901 and 1911 the sanctuary was abandoned following a bishop's interdict due to serious shortcomings of the administrators of the sanctuary. The interdict was lifted after Mr. Domenico Romagnoli don?? the land on which the sanctuary stood (the Cavallosa estate), with the addition of a small site, to the provost of San Michele in Tortona and the ancient now dilapidated oratory, thanks to the economic support of Romagnoli, was restored and enlarged, taking on its current appearance.
