Dedicated in 1947, "The Hiker" is located south of the Liberty Memorial in Penn Valley Park. It commemorates those who served in several wars and conflicts of the early 20th century, from the Spanish-American War to the Occupation of the Philippines and American troops participating in the European-led military interventions in China at the turn of the century of the 20th century.
The statue and many other similarly designed statues were created by Theodora Alice Ruggles Kit.
