Upper mills (stone mills)
The hydropower
was the most important source of energy in the Middle Ages.
The use of the Regnitz made the development of many businesses and thus the emergence of the city of Bamberg possible. The mills not only ground grain, but also pressed oil, crushed oak bark into tanner's loam, ground stones and milled cloth. Of the three former mill complexes in the city, the buildings of the Lower Mills (Brudermühlen) (1) and the Upper Mills (Steinmühlen) (2) are still preserved today.
The stone mills
consisted of eight mills that were organized cooperatively. The Obermüller lived in a stone house 3) from the Middle Ages. The structural maintenance of the mills and footbridges was carried out jointly, but the economic operation of each mill was carried out at the company's own risk. The citizens of Bamberg were obliged to only use the mills in the city area.
The mills have been frequently destroyed by fires and floods and have been rebuilt at various times.
The renovation of the Upper Mills took place between 1980-83.
