Between the Tempelherrenhaus (Temple House), which was largely destroyed in World War II, the Shakespeare Memorial, and the Borkenhäuschen (Borken House) in the park on the Ilm River, stretches an artificial ruin. It dates back to a time when it was customary to decorate parks in the style of an English garden with artificial ruins.
The ruin was converted in 1784, at the request of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, from an old shooting wall of the Weimar riflemen into an interesting design element of the park. The wall belonged to the shooting house next to the Liszt House and served as a bullet trap.
