Hiking
The coal mining industry at Deister has been an important industry around Deister for several centuries. Hard coal from the Lower Cretaceous (approx. 100 to 140 million years old) was mined and found in seams with a maximum thickness of 100 cm. Due to lack of economic efficiency, mining was discontinued in 1956 (Barsinghausen colliery) and 1960 (Strutzbergstollen).
