The American Basin is a popular spot along the Alpine Loop. There are some dispersed campsites, a reliable stream and the trailhead to summit Handies Peak that towers over the basin.

The basin is known to hold snow through July, so plan accordingly. You may want to bring microspikes just in case. From here you can run the Hardrock 100 route up to Handies (or at least beautiful Sloan Lake) or up over American Pass.
