The ʻŌhiʻa Cave, a historic preserve, consists of a complex system of lava tubes. It is connected to the surface through a few small openings, some of which are so narrow that they can only accommodate a single person. This extensive network of caves extends for about a mile from the vicinity of the ocean up into the hills. The tunnels and chambers within the cave vary, with some passages being so low that one must crawl on their belly to pass, while others open up into chambers that reach heights of 20 feet.
In the depths of this cave, the people of Hawai'i in ancient times sought refuge during periods of conflict and used it as a resting place for their deceased loved ones during times of peace.
