In its 130-year history, the "Rheinhotel Dreesen" has been an excursion restaurant, a luxury hostel, a dance club, Hitler's favorite hotel, a place of negotiation for world peace, a concentration camp branch, a refugee accommodation and the seat of the French High Commissioner. The Hotel am urdeutschen Strom and its people are on a first-name basis with German history - from the imperial era to the Bonn Republic. Following the chronology of events, the film tells the story of the hotel and its connection to the historical turning points.

The hotel was built in 1893/94 by Fritz Dreesen. He previously ran a summer farm here with a swimming area, like his father. The hotel has repeatedly been made structurally more attractive. In 1934, a movable glass roof was installed over the large terraced garden. The direct location on the Rhine repeatedly attracted world-famous guests, as did the unique view of the Siebengebirge. This is helped by the fact that the Dreesen family has been running the hotel themselves for well over 100 years. The hotel has acquired particular historical significance in connection with the Second World War. In 1938, Chamberlain and Hitler met here to resolve the Sudeten crisis. Foreign diplomats were interned during the war. After the war, the hotel was the seat of the French High Commissioner. (For the history of the Rheinhotel Dreesen see Godesberger Heimatseiten Volume 32, page 168, Volume 40, pages 147-171 and Volume 46, pages 101-108.)

Driving past the building isn't really a highlight (just drive to the entrance, it's nice). But learning about the history of the building is exciting anyway (there's also an interesting film on ARD). There's also a beer garden.
