The mighty Neuenburg complex rises high above the wine-growing town of Freyburg. With its foundation, its builder Ludwig the Springer secured the Landgraves of Thuringia's claim to power in the eastern part of their lands. Some famous names appear in the history of the castle: in 1224/25, Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia lived here, to whom the artfully ornamented double chapel was dedicated - a true Romanesque gem. Emperor Barbarossa had previously visited his brother-in-law at the “Neue Burg”, and the poet Heinrich von Veldeke wrote his “Eneasroman” here in the 12th century.
