The transporter bridge in the Cuxhaven district began operating in 1909. After a bridge was built nearby in the 1970s, it became obsolete for regular traffic. Volunteers worked to ensure that it continued operating for pedestrians, cyclists, and small vehicles – with success: This year, the support association, which has since also founded the "FährStuv" museum, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The transporter bridge has developed into a tourist magnet in recent decades, says Brinkmann.

The ferry is not a ship, but a vehicle suspended from a fixed support that moves across a body of water. According to the association, there are eight transporter bridges operating worldwide. In Germany, another one in Rendsburg normally operates across the Kiel Canal. However, due to a technical defect, the operator says it will be out of service until at least the end of July. According to the World Association of Transporter Bridges, there are other similar structures in Argentina, France, Great Britain, and Spain.
